Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, one of the most significant philosophers of the French Renaissance, said, "No wind favors him who has no destined port."
Many people live aimlessly. They seem to just drift along, going with the flow. That might be a cool thing to say when you're hanging out with friends, and sipping some beer, but that's not the way to live your life (the only life you have here on earth).
In Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, the following conversation takes place between Alice and Cheshire the Cat, when Alice is lost:
Alice: Which way should I go?
Cat: That depends on where you are going.
Alice: I don’t know.
Cat: Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.
Cheshire is absolutely right. If you don't know where you are going, then it doesn't matter which path you take. In fact, without the destination, there is no reason to make any effort to go anywhere at all!
Where are you headed? What is your destination? Which direction should you take? Ask these questions frequently as you navigate through life.
The ultimate destiny for the people of faith is the presence of God. With that in mind, we can figure out which way to go, what steps to take, who we are to journey with, etc. We can work backward from destiny, in other words.
Aimless living is no living at all. Live purposefully and passionately.
